Violent Summer Storms

Strong Storms Move “Against” the Grain

Intense summer thunderstorms formed earlier today in the mountains of Nicholas and Clay Counties WV and have moved steadily westward this Friday evening.

Feeding on an unusual chill in the heavens above, the torrential downpours from these storms falling on a "summer long" saturated ground will cause renewed water issues until the sun sets.

That east to west movement is rare but an indication of how unusual the weather continues now a full three weeks into summer.

Warnings for lightning strikes and pockets of wind and hail have been posted through Boone, Jackson, Kanawha , Lincoln, Roane,Logan and Putnam Counties were set to expire by 9 pm. Flash Flood Warnings for High Water run until 9:30 for much of this same area.

As of 7:45 pm, reports are that a mudslide has blocked all southbound lanes of I-77 in Sissonville.

From the Charleston mayor's office, the Live on the Levee concert with Kris Allen has moved to the Town Center Mall center court with an 8:45 show time. The fireworks have been cancelled.

The thunder and hail making shafts with these storms will collapse with the setting sun and only a few showers will be leftover by 11pm.
