ATHENS, Ohio (WSAZ) -- Athens residents will see a hike in their water bills starting next year.
In a press release, the city announced a 3 percent rate hike starting January 1, 2013.
The money will go towards covering increased labor, equipment and supply costs. The increase will also cover the replacement of aging water meters and distribution lines.
According to the release, a second phase of improvements to the water system is expected in the coming years.
The city said the increase is part of a plan for smaller rate increases over a period of time to help "avoid cumbersome debt loads."
