Winter Drags On and On and On

Spring may only be 3 weeks away, but to hear Tony C. tell it, Old Man Winter is not about to quietly. Not by a long shot!

Arctic Air Replenished

Wednesday’s quick hitting morning snowfall whittled away thanks in part to the strengthening last winter sun. As strong as the sun in early October, it is easily possible for an Alpine or Nordic skier to get a sun burn at this time of year while doing their favorite downhill or cross country trail.

Now we await a pair of very cold late winter days characterized by temperatures 15-20 degrees below normal as highs struggle to get past freezing on Thursday and Friday.

Again Thursday night a frozen pipe alert will be in effect as lows tank to 10 above or lower.

As the next arctic front passes Thursday morning, a noticeable increase in wind will be observed as Old Man Winter snorts his frosty disapproval at us. While snow flurries are always possible with these polar plunges, the deep cobalt blue sky of late winter should win out on both Thursday and Friday.

As the cold eases Friday night, a wintry mixed bag of snow, sleet and freezing rain will scoot our way. This mélange will try to slick up roads for the first light of Saturday.

Then the time frame from Saturday afternoon through Sunday evening will experience a nice thaw as temperatures rebound into the 40s even 50.

A word of caution though is in order; namely, every time this winter when it tried to warm up, a new cold blast armed with snow showers and falling temperatures soon followed. So March may indeed come in like a lion not only Saturday morning but also Monday-Tuesday of next week.

So for now enjoy this winter wonderland picture of Wednesday's snow in Barboursville and take heart! Spring begins on March 20th.
