ATHENS COUNTY, Ohio (WSAZ) -- Authorities say there was a happy ending to the rescue of a woman and dog from a water filled cistern Thursday morning.

The rescue took place right before noon at a residence along old State Route 33, which is outside of Athens, Ohio.

Sheriff Patrick Kelly says the incident began with a dog falling into the 25 feet deep cistern that was filled with about 10 feet of water.

Kelly says the dog’s owner, 28-year-old Natalie D. Kruse, decided with the help of family members to rappel into the well to save the dog. After entering the cistern, Kruse was unable to get out.

Deputies and members of the Richland Fire Department responded to the scene to help free Kruse and her dog.

The Sheriff says firefighters were able to rescue both Natalie and her dog.

The canine was wet, but okay. Neither required medical attention.
