HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) – A woman from South Point, Ohio has been sentenced to prison for embezzling $150,000 from her workplace in Huntington.

In April, Connie Lynn Whitley, 51, pleaded guilty to the crime.

Whitley was a bookkeeper with Uptowner Inn, which owns several hotels and HUD apartments. She was arrested by W.Va. State Police back in October 2013.

During a hearing in U.S District Court in Huntington on Monday, Whitley was sentenced to 18 months in a federal prison.

Prosecutors say Whitley wrote approximately 191 checks from five different accounts from July 2009 to September 2013.

Whitley told investigators she was originally behind on bills and wrote the first check to pay them.

She continued to write checks, and that the bulk of the money was spent on illegal pain pills for her husband’s drug habit.

Whitley also said the money was use to buy a TV and buy supplies for her husband’s birdhouse business.
