Police Officer Has Close Call with Armed Burglar

SOUTH POINT, Ohio (WSAZ) – A suspected burglar is under arrest after a close call with a police officer.

25-year-old Alfie Blevins has been an officer with the South Point Police Department a little less than a year.

Early Friday morning, he says his long hours of training paid off.

"It was very tense," Blevins said.

After getting a call from a concerned neighbor about suspicious people on their porch about 12:30 a.m., Blevins responded, and later saw three people walking nearby who matched the description.

"I thought it was kind of suspicious they were walking at that time of the night," he said.

Blevins says he asked the people, two men and a woman, to stop. He says one of the men kept his hands near his pockets. Blevins asked the man to stand against his police car, but the man continued to keep his hands near his pockets.

"As I started to check him, his hands kept coming off the car,” Blevins said.

Blevins says he then noticed the man had a gun tucked in his pants.

“He was trying very hard to get control of that gun,” Blevins said. “I wasn't going to let that happen. I unholstered my weapon and I put it to his back, and I warned the suspect if he would continue, because my hand was slipping, that I was going to fire into his back. He finally complied and put his hands up on the cruiser."

That suspect, 20-year-old Matthew Arthur from Ashland, is believed to have broken into another home in South Point earlier in the day and stolen $10,000 worth of jewelry, as well as the gun.

Jim Gullett lives across from the house on Solida Road that was broken into.

"I'm glad they caught him quickly because he would have broken into more homes," Gullett said.

Arthur is facing a long list of charges, including resisting arrest while brandishing a firearm, burglary, and paraphernalia.

The stolen jewelry has not been recovered.

The other two people he was with are not accused of doing anything illegal.
