UPDATE: Dems Seek W.Va. Successor for US Sen. Rockefeller

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- Democrats must keep looking for a West Virginia candidate to run in 2014 when U.S. Sen. Jay Rockefeller retires.
A leading prospect for that contest, former U.S. Sen. Carte Goodwin, says he's out.
Goodwin turns 39 next week. He's raising two young children with his wife.
Goodwin says that working in Washington, D.C., would mean only seeing his family on weekends.
Democrats search for a candidate with Republican U.S. Rep. Shelley Moore Capito already running a 2014 campaign.
The 2nd District congresswoman unveiled plans to seek Rockefeller's Senate seat before the senior Democrat announced in January that he'll retire.
Goodwin served in the Senate in 2010. He's also ruled out running for Capito's seat in 2014, but isn't swearing off elected politics entirely.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Former Sen. Carte Goodwin has been meeting with Democratic officials who are seeking a candidate to run in 2014 for a West Virginia seat long in the party's hands.
Goodwin met with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid in the Capitol on Thursday.
Sen. Jay Rockefeller has announced plans to retire rather than run again next year. Republican Rep. Shelly Moore Capito has said she plans to seek the seat.
Goodwin served for a few months in the Senate in 2010 after he was appointed to fill a vacancy created by the death of Sen. Robert C. Byrd.
It was not known what other potential recruits Reid has met with, if any.
West Virginia has sent only Democrats to the Senate for decades, but has gone Republican in recent presidential elections.
