CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- West Virginia Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin has won re-election over Republican challenger Bill Maloney, the Associated Press reports.

Tomblin, a Democrat who was elected governor in a special election after former Gov. Joe Manchin assumed the late Robert C. Byrd’s U.S. Senate Seat, made some of the following remarks during his victory speech:

“After four campaigns in 18 months, thanks to help from all of you, I have the great honor and good fortune to be Governor of West Virginia for four more years. While this is a night of triumph and celebration for so many of us, we would be remiss if we did not take a moment to think of our brothers and sisters around West Virginia who still are struggling in the wake of Sandy’s devastation. Our state has been hit hard by two unprecedented storms in just five months -- storms that took the lives of several of our residents.”

“Tonight’s result is proof that West Virginians want to come together to move our state forward. They appreciate ideas, they value experience, and they want our state to continue to move forward. They want more jobs and lower taxes.”

“I truly believe our state is poised for greatness, and I am proud to have played a part in getting us to this point.”

"During the next four years, we have much to accomplish. But I assure you we will be fiscally responsible, ensuring that we are able to create good-paying jobs in West Virginia."

"As I have in the past, I will lead the way in working with members of both parties, across the political spectrum, to do what is right for West Virginia and our residents. My door will be open to all."

Maloney released the following statement:

"I am honored by the thousands of West Virginians who supported me with their vote today. While the outcome was not what we had hoped for, I am proud of our efforts and that we brought a voice to those West Virginians who are tired of the status-quo and are ready to build a Brighter Future for West Virginia. I called Gov. Tomblin and wished him well and offered my support. I will continue to work to restore the hope for a Brighter Future for our state."
