Special Election Set for U.S. Congressional Seat in Ky.

UPDATE 8/17/12 @ 11 p.m.
FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) -- Gov. Steve Beshear has scheduled a special election to replace former Republican U.S. Rep. Geoff Davis for Nov. 6 -- the same day as the general election.

That means big savings for taxpayers in the 4th District.

Lynn Zellen, spokeswoman for the secretary of state's office, said holding the special congressional election on a separate day could have cost as much as $500,000.

Waiting until Nov. 6 also means 4th District residents will be without a congressman for a while longer.

Beshear spokeswoman Kerri Richardson announced the special election on Friday.

Republican Thomas Massie, a tea party favorite, is running against Democrat Bill Adkins, a lawyer from northern Kentucky.

Davis resigned in July, citing a family health issue. He had already taken himself out of the running for re-election.

ORIGINAL STORY 7/31/12
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- U.S. Rep. Geoff Davis, who previously announced he would retire this year from Congress, has resigned immediately from his seat.

Davis, a Republican from Kentucky's 4th District, said in a statement that a family health issue has developed recently that needs more of his time and that he would resign effective Tuesday. Republican Thomas Massie and Democrat Bill Adkins are running to succeed Davis in November's general election.

The 53-year-old fiscal and social conservative has served a district that stretches along the upper tier of Kentucky from the Louisville suburbs to the West Virginia border since 2005.
