VIENNA, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The sudden death of a teenage student while playing soccer has neighbors in Wood County grieving Friday night.
Officials tell WSAZ.com, Jackson Middle School student Marissa Miller collapsed Thursday night while at soccer practice.
Friends of Miller say she was both academically and athletically exceptional, though her personality is what's note-worthy.
“When she laughed, her smile just lit up the whole room,” said childhood friend and neighbor Catherine Onestinghel. “Having this happen is just shocking.”
On Friday, pictures quickly spread on social media of Miller and her basketball jersey. Friends tell WSAZ.com that Miller was popular for her domination of the soccer field and basketball court.
An official cause of death has not been released, but neighbors close to the family tell WSAZ.com Marissa had an unknown heart condition that caused her death.
“I just wish if we could have one more day,” Onestinghel said, “we'd make it count.”
Mike Winland, director of secondary schools for Wood County, tells WSAZ.com the 7th grader was playing in a youth soccer league game in Parkersburg when she collapsed. She was taken to a hospital where she later died.
The student attended Jackson Middle School.
Winland says the school system is following its crisis plan and extra counselors have been placed at a couple of schools in the county to help students and staff deal with the loss.
No other details are being released at this time.
