KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The campaign trail for mayoral candidate Pete McCuskey came to an end on Saturday after he was defeated by incumbent Mayor Dick Callaway to represent the Citizens Party in June’s general election.

"I think as a public official you should set the standard for what is right and what is wrong," McCuskey said.

McCuskey claims what is right and what is wrong became blurred during early voting.

"I've received complaints from people that said that the mayor had been coming in while they were voting, and it made them feel uncomfortable," McCuskey said.

"Well, I think its voter intimidation -- and I think it's sickening," said mayoral candidate Tim Watts, who lost in Saturday’s primary election.

The accusations against Mayor Callaway say he violated the law that says candidates can’t be within 300 feet of a polling place. But, Callaway’s office is in City Hall where early voting took place.

"I had to perform my duties as the mayor of the city of St. Albans -- and there was no politicking going on,” Callaway said.

"When you hear things from people that are totally not related and it's not conjecture, it must have actually occurred -- and it's a travesty," McCuskey said.

But Tim Watts says the accusations don’t stop with alleged violations of the 300-foot rule.

"I had several texts and phone calls about when they walked into the early voting they were automatically handed a Citizen's Party ballot and, if they asked for the People's Party ballot, they were met with sarcasm or questioned about it," said Watts.

"Well it's a complete fabrication, actually -- none of that took place so it's, you know, sour grapes," Callaway said.
