UPDATE 1/4/2014@ 7 p.m.
LOGAN COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A man is fighting for his life in the hospital and another is behind bars after an early morning shooting in Wilkinson.
State Police say Christopher Ellis shot Ronnie May twice at a home on Monitor Hill about 2 a.m.
They say after May was shot, Ellis began beating him in the face with the handle of the gun. Pieces of the gun were recovered at the crime scene.
The suspect's brother, Jason Ellis, lives at the home and watched the horror unfold. He says May had been visiting him when Christopher pulled up in the driveway and lost control.
"I went out there to try to separate them...I didn't want them fighting in my house," he said.
Jason told WSAZ.com the pair had been feuding for months about Ellis' wife, and threats were exchanged.
"I don't think my brother should be in [jail] because he's not the one who started it," Jason said. "[Ronnie] kept calling him names, daring him up here, and everything else."
Ronnie's family members say he struggled with mental health problems for years, but all efforts to help him failed.
"He's a good person," said his brother, Claude May. "He was beat down and he was shot. He didn't deserve that."
Family members tell WSAZ.com Ronnie remains in critical condition in the hospital.
Ellis is being held in jail on $25,000 bail.
