UPDATE 2/1/13 @ 5:30 p.m.
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The day took a dramatic turn Friday for employees and customers at a bank in Charleston.

The BB&T at Patrick Street Plaza was robbed just before 10 a.m.

“You gotta be careful where you go anymore,” Mike Givens, a customer, said.

Givens was surprised to show up at the bank to find the doors locked. At a place where the employees know him by name, he hated to hear their lives were put in danger.

“I'm glad everybody's OK. They're like family,” Givens said.

Police spent the day looking through evidence, and officers are now asking for any help finding the suspect. The entire robbery was caught on camera.

“He did present a note to the teller that indicated that he had a firearm and that he was willing to use it,” Charleston Police Lt. Steve Cooper said.

Police say the suspect never actually showed the gun, but the threat itself was enough to get the cash.

“It's a traumatic situation for a bank teller,” Cooper said. “They are a little shaken up, but they're keeping it together and they are very cooperative and helpful.”

Police say bank employees followed proper procedure during the robbery and did what they needed to do to keep themselves and their customers safe.

“It's awful, because anybody could have got hurt,” Givens said. “There's crazy people out here that will shoot you for a penny.”

The suspect was last seen running toward the Kanawha River. It’s unclear just how much money he was able to get away with.

The bank remained closed for the rest of the afternoon.
