UPDATE 1/4/13 @ 10 p.m.
CABELL COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A man hunting for rabbits Friday afternoon along the Ohio River came across a human skull.

"First I thought it was a toy,” he said. “Upon closer examination, I decided it must belong to a human."

The hunter, who didn't want his name used, took it back to his house and called police.

"I was afraid I might not be able to find the same spot again," he said.

He went back with sheriff's deputies to the scene just north of Lesage. They searched the area for other human remains but didn't find any.

"At this point we don't know the age, gender, ethnicity, anything with regards to the remains itself," Sheriff Tom McComas said.

The sheriff says there is a possibility the skull washed in from the river. The hunter says he found it about 25 feet from there.

McComas says the skull will be taken to the Chief Medical Examiner's Office in Charleston Saturday morning.

From there, investigators will determine how extensive a search of that area would be necessary.
