UPDATE: Two Dead after Fight, One Killed by Police, Names Released

MINGO COUNTY, WVa, (WSAZ) --- West Virginia State Police are investigating a brutal attack that left two men dead, on Wednesday night.

"The victim, Alfred Curry, was able to leave the residence on foot," Trooper Cody Douglas said. "He made it a short distance down the roadway, where he collapsed, due to his injuries, which were quite severe."

What happened after that, was a bizarre chain of events.

Curry's brother is County Commissioner David Baisden. When he arrved on the scene off Elk Creek Road, the supsect, Phillip Gilman, got in Baisden's truck and ran over Curry in the middle of the street, killing him.

Louise Diamond says she lived with Curry for 25 years. WSAZ contacted her on the property, Thursday afternoon.

"My heart is breaking" Diamond said. "These men knew each other and it's just so tragic."

MINGO COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- We now know the names of two men who were killed during a fight in rural Mingo County.

Sgt. Michael Baylous with the West Virginia State Police tells WSAZ.com that Alfred Russell Curry, 75, of Left Fork of Elk Creek in the Delbarton area was killed Wednesday night.

It happened around 10 p.m. on Elk Creek Rd., near Rt. 65 north of Delbarton.

Delbarton Police told our crew on the scene that the victim was attacked by a man with a hammer.

Sgt. Baylous says that man was Phillip Gilman, 43, of North Matewan.

Delbarton Police tell WSAZ.com that the victim's brother arrived on the scene after the attack and was helping his injured brother, when the suspect got into his vehicle and ran the victim over, killing him.

Officers say first responders arrived on the scene a short time later and shot the suspect, who fled into the woods.

Sgt. Baylous says a Delbarton Police Officer found Gilman, and fatally shot him.

West Virginia State Police are investigating.

MINGO COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Two men are dead following an altercation in rural Mingo County, according to Delbarton Police.

It happened about 10 p.m. on Elk Creek Rd., near Rt. 65 north of Delbarton.

Delbarton Police tell our crew at the scene a man was attacked with a hammer and left in the roadway near his home. When the victim's brother arrived and was attending to the injured man, the suspect jumped in the vehicle and ran over the victim in the roadway -- killing him.

Officers say first responders arrived at the scene a short time later and shot the suspect, who fled into the woods injured. Police caught up with the suspect shortly afterward, shooting and killing him.

The West Virginia State Police is handling the investigation, and declined to release details pending family notification of the two men killed.
