UPDATE: ICL Plant Issues Statement Following Chemical Leak

UPDATE 5/4/11 @ 5:43 p.m.
MASON COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A statement has been released by the ICL-IP plant following a chemical leak that prompted a shelter-in-place for residents in parts of Mason County, West Virginia and Gallia County, Ohio.

Site Manager John Kadlec says, "Based on the information we have at this time, ICL-IP America, located in Gallipolis Ferry, W.Va. experienced an emergency event on Friday, May 4, 2012 at 3:18 p.m.
The emergency event involved the release of phosphorus trichloride liquid and hydrocloric acid fumes due to a pump failure. The liquid phosphorus trichloride released was contained on site but the hydrocloric acid fumes left the site. Hydrocloric acid is most commonly known as muriatic acid, commonly used in swimming pools. There have been no employees injured as a result of this situation. The event has been addressed and the all-clear has been sounded. Notifications were made to the appropriate agencies and the investigation into the incident is underway."

911 dispatchers tell WSAZ.com a shelter-in-place was issued for residents in Gallipolis Ferry, W.Va. and Gallipolis, Ohio for about 30 minutes following the leak.

The shelter-in-place has been lifted for all areas.

911 dispatchers tell WSAZ.com the shelter-in-place in effect for Gallipolis Ferry, W.Va. and Gallipolis, Ohio was lifted about 30 minutes after a leak was reported at the ICL plant in Gallipolis Ferry.

No word on what caused the leak.

MASON COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A chemical leak has prompted a shelter-in-place for residents in parts of Mason and Gallia Counties.

Mason County emergency dispatchers tell WSAZ.com a leak at the ICL plant in Gallipolis Ferry was reported about 3:30 p.m.

A shelter-in-place to be issued for all residents of Gallipolis Ferry.

They say a chemical cloud was released from the leak and is moving over into Gallipolis, Ohio.

As a result, Gallia County dispatchers say a shelter-in-place has also been issued for residents of Gallipolis.

The shelter-in-place is in effect until further notice.
