DOH Uses Transportation Management Center to Track Traffic During Storm

Updated: Tue 9:23 PM, Oct 30, 2012

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Downed trees and power lines, snow, rain and high water all wreaked havoc on the roads Tuesday.

However, road crews in West Virginia are able to respond to these types of situations quickly, thanks to the Division of Highway's Transportation Management Center (TMC).

Road crews are working around the clock to keep the roads clear and safe, and so are the workers behind the scenes.

DOH employees in the TMC spent the day answering calls and keeping an eye on some of the state's major roads.

Thirty-five cameras are set up throughout West Virginia -- allowing DOH workers to see where any bad accidents are, as well as keeping an eye on the roads' conditions.

All images from those cameras can be seen on a wall of monitors at the TMC.

“This is where it starts. We communicate with office of emergency services, county 911 facilities,” West Virginia Division of Highways spokesperson Brent Walker said.

Along with reporting any problems to emergency and road crews, the system also allows the DOH to get road updates to the public even faster.
