UPDATE 6/17/13 @ 10:38 p.m.
RAND, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A special neighborhood crime watch meeting was called in Rand to encourage cooperation between neighbors and Kanawha County Sheriff's deputies.
The Rand Community Center was packed Monday night with concerned neighbors, coming together to show their strength in numbers.
"I've lived in Rand for about 50 years, and it's just ridiculous," Barbara Casey said. "The drug trafficking and the breaking in ... I just don't feel safe anymore."
Sheriff's deputies say they've seen three violent home invasions in just the past year. But they say they need your help to stop criminals in their tracks.
"We've had deputies patrolling Rand aggressively," Cpl. Brian Humphreys said. "But we can't solve crimes without people helping us. We need people who know something about the community, the suspects and the victims."
Sylvester Smith founded the neighborhood watch program three years ago and says he's watched it grow steadily since then, along with the level of crime.
Even the community center itself, he says, was a recent victim of break-ins.
"They stole three cameras in the area and a television," Smith said.
Now he's calling for neighbors to step up and speak up to keep the streets safe.
"It's each of our jobs to watch over the other," Smith said. "That's what makes a neighborhood."
Deputies say a suspect in one of the home invasions is now behind bars.
They say Tevin "Smook" Williams turned himself in to police in Nashville, Tenn. He will be extradited back to Kanawha County.
Deputies say they are examining possible connections between the three home invasions.
