CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- Federal health officials are urging a renewed focus on diabetes prevention efforts in West Virginia, where more than one in 10 adults in the state has the disease.

The Appalachian Regional Commission sponsored a roundtable discussion Thursday in Charleston on diabetes. Among those in attendance were health professionals and representatives of the state and other agencies.

Dr. Ann Albright of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says one in three children born in 2000 will develop diabetes over their lifetime.

U.S. Sen. Jay Rockefeller presented a video message at the discussion and calls diabetes "a statewide epidemic." He says the meeting reinforced the need to invest in diabetes prevention.
