MILTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Was it an accident or something far more sinister that led a family's car windows to shatter while driving down the interstate? Police are leaning toward foul play.
That was after they received a troubling 911 call just before the incident happened -- a scary situation that could have been much worse.
It happened during rush hour Thursday along the eastbound lanes of Interstate 64 near Milton. What makes this even scarier is it could have happened to anyone.
“I had no idea. I thought the car had been hit by something,” Bernie Walker said. "All of a sudden there was an explosion.”
It was a hair-raising accident that occurred along the eastbound lanes of I-64, just past the Milton exit around the 31-mile marker.
Walker, his wife and 5-year-old grandson were headed to Charleston -- ironically to see about his sister who had just been in a wreck herself. Little did they know what was going on along the road ahead of him.
“We got a call at about 5:10 that kids were up on the interstate throwing rocks at cars on the interstate,” Milton Police Patrolman Dean Bishop said.
A Milton Police officer went to check things out but didn't find anything.
“About 20 minutes later, we got a call that a car had its windows on the passenger side busted out,” Bishop said.
And just like that, the walkers were sitting on the side of the interstate -- two passenger-side windows on their van busted, and they had no idea what hit them. Police say it was most likely a prank, but Walker and police officers agree there's nothing funny about hurling objects at cars on the interstate.
“It was pretty terrifying because of the impact,” Walker said.
“Just don't do it because you don't know who's in the car. In this case, there was a 5-year-old boy in the back seat and if the rock had hit him, it could have been much worse,” Bishop said.
If you know or saw anything from 5 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday near the 31 mile-marker, just past the Milton exit, call the Milton Police Department at 304-743-9211.
