Father Charged in Shooting Incident; Gun Dumped by School

Updated: Thu 9:01 PM, Feb 21, 2013

KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) – A former corrections officer at the South Central Regional Jail is now headed back to the jail, but this time – as an inmate.

Gary Arthur Lacy Jr, 35, from Cross Lanes has been arrested and charged with domestic assault and wanton endangerment.

According to the criminal complaint, it started Sunday when Lacy started destroying items in a house while threatening to hit his wife.

Then Thursday morning, Lacy was meeting his wife and their two children to tell them he loved them. That’s when Lacy apparently took out a gun and fired a shot into the air.

The complaint states that Lacy fled the area and threw the pistol from his car while driving past Point Harmony Elementary School. This happened Thursday just after 8:30 a.m.

“We just got a call from the school. It was the principal just letting us know the kids were safe and the police had taken care of everything,” Michelle Spencer, a parent, said.

Lacy was caught Thursday morning and arrested by deputies with the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office.

Thursday afternoon, deputies remained at the school.

“We're just here to give reassurance to the parents and the children both. It never hurts for us to be seen just to make folks in the community feel better,” Corporal John Ratliff said.

“They're keeping our kids safe now,” Spencer said.

In January, Lacy was suspended from his job at the South Central Regional Jail and charged with contraband into jail.

According to the complaint, in December, he was sneaking cigarettes to an inmate.

Deputies say other charges are pending against Lacy.
