KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Two dozen deputies will be patrolling the streets of Kanawha County on Thursday to make sure children stay safe during trick-or-treat.

Trick-or-treat was postponed until Thursday due to Monday night's wintry conditions from Superstorm Sandy.

According to a news release, patrols will be all over the county, especially in places historically prone to Halloween vandalism. Deputies will be out in both marked and unmarked vehicles, as well as on foot.

Deputies say they will have "zero tolerance" for would-be vandals.

Safety Tips for Trick-or-Treat
Trick-or-treaters should follow some of the following safety precautions to ensure their well-being:

  • Visit only trusted houses and familiar areas. Specifically houses with lights on which is a signal to their participation in the event.
  • Stay off of the traveled roadway when possible by using sidewalks in well-lighted areas only.
  • Wear reflective clothing.
  • Carry a Flashlight or similar illuminating device like a “Glow Stick.”
  • Deputies say parents should inspect all candy prior to consumption.
