UPDATE 5/14/14 @ 6 p.m.
CLAY COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The votes are finally counted in Clay County, W.Va., but getting to that point wasn't easy. On Tuesday night, officials had to call in technicians after the ballot counting machine stopped working.

The county clerk said they'd counted about 600 early votes when the machine stopped.

She said maintenance crews came in around 9:30 p.m. As of Wednesday morning, they still had no fix.

Beyond the frustration, officials said at that point, there really was nothing they could do but keep the ballots safe.

"We were instructed to lock the ballots up in the vault, which we did," Clay County Commissioner Jerry Linkinoggor said. "We had two locks on each canister, we separated the keys. I kept one set overnight; the county clerk kept the other set. Last thing I did before I left the building was set the burglar alarm so everything was secured and good order and back and finished today."

County commissioners said they borrowed another ballot counting machine from Roane County on Wednesday. They said they finally got the votes counted for Clay County about 11:30 a.m. Wednesday.

The county clerk said they ran several maintenance tests on their own machine until Election Day. She said everything seemed to be working fine until the votes needed to be counted.

She also said in the 15 years they've been using the machine, they've never had a major malfunction like this.

The clerk also added voter turnout was good.
