KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The Kanawha County Sheriff's Office says a body found in a shallow grave in Raleigh County late last month has been identified as a missing man.

The sheriff's office says the state medical examiner has positively identified the body found along Old Turnpike Road near Beckley on Oct. 30, as Kareem Hunter.

Hunter, of Charleston, had been missing since September 23.

The case is being investigated as a homicide. Kelsey Legg, 19, of Marmet, has been charged with murder in the case.

UPDATE 10/31/13 @ 5 p.m.
RALEIGH COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A body found in a shallow grave may help bring one family closure.

"I just don't understand. I just want to know why," says Linda Hunter.

Her son, Kareem, has been missing since late September. On Thursday, deputies in Kanawha and Raleigh counties removed a body from a grave, saying there's a high probability it could be Kareem Hunter.

People searching in an abandoned home for scrap metal on Old Turnpike road in Beckley found the body on Wednesday.

"With the weather we had recently, all of the dirt had been washed away and it was very readily apparent we had a human body there," explains Raleigh County Sheriff Steve Tanner.

He says physical evidence leads them to believe it could be Hunter. "With the body here in the shallow grave there are a number of things that lead us to believe he is connected to that case."

Kelsey Legg was arrested earlier this month for Hunter's murder. Until Wednesday, there was no sign of where his body could be.

Sheriff Tanner says they've been working to make sure the evidence stays intact. He says the cold weather in Raleigh County preserved the body. "We have to be very meticulous and operate very slowly so that we don't lose any of the remaining physical evidence that's why we have been here for two days."

Hunter's family says it's been an agonizing couple of days. "If this is Kareem's body they found, it will bring a whole lot of closure because then he can be laid to rest properly," Linda Hunter, says.

The body was taken to the state medical examiners office for an autopsy and for a positive identification.

UPDATE 10/31/13 @ 11:15 a.m.
RALEIGH COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The body found near Beckley appears to be connected to a murder investigation in Kanawha County.

During a news conference Thursday, Raleigh County Deputies say there is a strong probability that the body is that of Kareem Hunter. Hunter, 29, of Charleston, went missing last month and a few days later a woman was charged in his death. However, his body was never found.

The body was found Wednesday afternoon near an abandoned home on Old Turnpike Road in the Harper Heights near Beckley in what investigators describe as an apparent shallow grave.

"Yesterday, we had a couple of individuals going through some abandoned houses to find anything they could sell as scrap metal. During the course of that day, they discovered what they believed to be human remains," Raleigh County Sheriff Steve Tanner said.

Deputies say the recent rain has washed away some dirt and the body has been exposed to weather for a brief period of time. However, deputies were able to determine that the body found appears to have the same physical description of Hunter.

Deputies say the Hunter's family has been notified about the discovery in Raleigh County.

Investigators believe it will take several hours to remove the body from the shallow grave.
