CLAY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A Clay County man is behind bars after state police say he was looking up child pornography on a computer at the library.

"I was totally shocked because it is so secure," said Sheila Thorne, Clay County Public Library Director.

The whole controversy centers around 31-year-old John Rider.

West Virginia State Police said Rider was looking up child pornography on one of the library’s computers. According to the criminal complaint, Rider searched 25 disturbing and explicit phrases involving minors in a matter of two hours. He even admitted to police to looking up the porn because he was curious and wanted to see how easy it would be to find.

"That evidently is a breach in the system somewhere," said Thorne.

Thorne said these computers are supposed to be very secure. In fact, users aren’t able to access sites like Facebook or MySpace. Even searching certain words or phrases will turn up nothing.

"I just went into Google and on the Google search typed in naked and it comes up with an over-ride block,” Thorne said. “You have to unblock it. And I have to enter a username and password, the workers do not even have that. Me as a director has that."

Library users said this arrest is upsetting because children use the library.

"They must not have that much sense in them to go out in public and do that," said Matthew Jarrett.

Now the question is how Rider allegedly was able to view those disturbing images in a system that’s supposed to be so secure.

Library officials said they have cameras around the computers. Police even confiscated the footage and were able to identify Rider using the computer at the time the child pornography was accessed.

They said they’ll have to monitor things more closely now so this doesn’t happen again.

Police received a complaint from the Office of Information, Security and Controls in reference to the child porn. That office wasn’t able to comment on how Rider allegedly breached the system.

Police haven’t returned our calls.
