CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- If your child takes the bus to school, you know it can be a long trip. For dozens of parents on Sugar Creek Road in Charleston, just getting their children to the bus Wednesday was more than half the battle.

“They need to hurry up and get it done,” Shelly Baley, a Sugar Creek resident, said about the road construction. “You can't get the school buses up here or nothing.”

Parents who live along Sugar Creek Road got a call from the Kanawha County Board of Education Tuesday night saying their children would have to catch the bus at the end of the road.

For some, that’s 2 miles away.

“A family called me last night had an 8-year-old girl, and there's no way she could walk from where she lives to the mouth of Sugar Creek this morning. We have no sidewalks, and all we have are holes in the road,” City Councilman William Kirk said.

It's all because of a mandatory sewage project.

“It's needed 100 percent, because if we had not done this project, the federal government would have come in and done it for us,” Kirk said.

Kirk says that would have cost twice as much. But that's the last thing on the minds of hundreds of neighbors who battle the traffic backup every day.

“I'm very frustrated. It's been like this since the beginning of summer. We keep thinking it's going to get better, and it just keeps getting worse,” Sharon Sohovich, a neighbor, said.

Sohovich and others say they’ve waited in traffic as long as 45 minutes just to get from the construction to their homes a couple of miles up the road.

WSAZ.com contacted the director of the Charleston Sanitary Board Wednesday to see if there's any sort of timeline as to when this portion of the project will be finished. That call has not yet been returned.

However, WSAZ did get an automated message from the Kanawha County Board of Education Wednesday night saying the bus route would be back to normal by Thursday.
