Marshall President: Midyear Cuts Possible

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- Marshall University President Stephen J. Kopp has told faculty and staff to prepare to make significant changes due to budget cuts that Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin has ordered for state agencies next year.
Kopp said Monday he cannot rule out that reductions in state appropriations will occur before next year's budget cuts take place.
But state Budget Director Mike McKown says it's too early to talk about midyear cuts. He says that his philosophy is to "prepare for the worst (and) hope for the best."
West Virginia state agencies are reviewing their options for complying with a 7.5 percent cut sought by Tomblin.
They face a Sept. 1 deadline set by state law for submitting their tightened spending plans.
