MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WSAZ) -- A 7-year-old boy from Mingo County, W.Va., enjoying a beach trip with his family had a scary encounter Sunday with what may have been a shark.

Rudy Varney was swimming in the Atlantic Ocean near 3rd Avenue North in Myrtle Beach when he was bitten. It happened at about noon Sunday.

The boy's brother pulled him out of the water, and he was taken to a nearby hospital.

Part of a muscle in Rudy Varney's right leg was torn during the incident, so he will have to be on crutches for about two weeks.

Police have sent pictures of the bite to the Division of Natural Resources so they can determine what bit the boy. Myrtle Beach lifeguards believe it may have been a sand shark.
