Natalie Tennant Leads Potential Democratic US Senate Candidates

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito maintains a significant lead in the race for US Senate.

Capito announced last year she would run for Senator Jay Rockefeller's seat. Rockefeller announced in January he won't run for re-election in 2014.

Mark Blankenship Enterprises (MBE) conducted a recent survey and found Capito has a significant lead over potential Democratic candidates.

Capito has a 19-percent point lead over potential Democratic challenger and Supreme Court Justice Robin Davis in the general election, according to a release. More than half of voters indicate they would vote for Capito in a match-up with Davis.

Meanwhile, the survey found if Secretary of State Natalie Tennant decides to run for US Senate she would be considered a strong candidate.

40 percent of Democratic primary voters indicate they would vote for Tennant in the primary election against Supreme Court Justice Robin Davis.

Tennant received 40 percent of democratic voters surveyed, compared to Davis who received 12 percent. Thirty two percent of voters say they would vote for Davis and 18 percent indicate they are undecided. Attorney Nick Preservati and Attorney Ralph Baxter both had 1 percent of voters.

“Tennant polls very well among self-described liberal democrats and across all three congressional districts” said Mark Blankenship, CEO of MBE. ”The Democratic field hasn’t taken shape yet, but among the most discussed potential candidates, Tennant certainly should be considered to hold the position of strength."

In a Capito-Davis match-up, more than half indicate they would vote for Capito compared to 32 percent who name Davis, according to the survey. Almost 18 percent of voters are undecided.

“When positioned against another prominent Democrat in Justice Davis, Capito’s lead is very similar and that indicates to me she will be a very strong candidate regardless of her Democratic opposition in 2014” Blankenship said.
