Neighbors Concerned about Traffic Design for New Sheetz

Updated: Wed 8:33 PM, Oct 10, 2012

TEAYS VALLEY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A new business is causing concerns for parents worried about their children's safety.

The trip from the school bus to their parents’ arms may just be the safest part of some students’ day. It's while they're waiting for the bus that has parents like Stephanie Corsaro concerned.

“If you have people coming off a 45 mile per hour road onto a neighborhood street, they're going to be coming fast,” Corsaro said.

Traffic turning into the Green Acres subdivision could soon get much worse.

Plans for a new Sheetz gas station call for a side entrance to the parking lot -- meaning drivers would first enter Green Acres right where children wait for the school bus.

“They don't need to be in our subdivision,” Edward Penix, a parent, said.

“We don't have a problem with them locating here at all. We just feel that they should not be using our street as an entrance to their business,” Corsaro said.

So parents are now making it their business to get the plans changed.

They've spoken with officials at Sheetz and have even addressed the Putnam County Board of Education, which is working to improve safety at the bus stop. However, it's not enough to stop neighbors from worrying.

“Our concerns are that our children are going to get hit and run over, potentially hurt or even worse,” Penix said.

WSAZ.com contacted Sheetz to see if there are any plans to address this issue. Those calls have not yet been returned.

There is a meeting set at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Putnam County Courthouse where both Sheetz and neighbors will have a chance to talk about these concerns.
