UPDATE 5/21/13
LOGAN COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A 21-year-old husband/father is dead after a car crash. Meanwhile, his teenage brother-in-law is fighting for his life.

“Everybody loves Jacob,” Kathy Moore, principal at Chapmanville Regional High School, said.

Jacob Canterbury is a junior at CRHS and was in a bad car accident Monday night. His older brother-in-law, Austin Marcum, 21, was driving.

Canterbury remains in the hospital, but Marcum didn't survive.

“We've got a young man, young husband whose life is lost,” Moore said. “He's got a wife, and they've got a young baby.”

The crash happened on Route 10 just south of Chapmanville in Logan County.

Police say it appears Marcum crossed the center line -- hitting another car head-on.

“Probably one of the worst car wrecks I’ve been on since I joined the fire department,” Matthew Dingess, a volunteer firefighter, said.

Responding to the crash was bad enough for Dingess. Seeing his classmate inside the car was something he didn't expect.

“I was just trying to get him out of there as quick as possible,” Dingess said. “You get that funny feeling in your gut that that might be the last time you talk to that person or what was the last thing you said to them earlier at school.”

To help students cope, Moore jumped into action -- using her principal facebook page.

“I immediately say ‘attention tiger nation, we've got to get the prayer chain going for our classmate, Jacob Canterbury,” Moore said.

The post was quickly shared by dozens. By time the first bell rang, Tuesday, a student support system was already in place.

“The students bond together. It's a family,” Moore said.

At last check, Canterbury was in critical but stable condition.

Nobody in the other car was seriously hurt in the crash.
