CHAPMANVILLE, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Two parents have been arrested and charged in the death of their one-month-old baby boy.
The baby died Tuesday morning at the family's home in Chapmanville.
West Virginia State Police say both parents, Timothy and Bessie Marcum, were arrested Wednesday evening.
They are both charged with child neglect resulting in death.
Police say Timothy had taken drugs and had fallen asleep while holding his one-month-old baby, Alexander. When he woke up, the baby's face was pressed up against him. He had been smothered and died.
Police say Bessie was arrested because she was in the house and knew Timothy had taken the drugs.
However, the baby's aunt (Bessie’s sister), says she believes Bessie is innocent.
"We want justice for him (Alexander) because he deserves it,” Christina Porter, the aunt, said. “We love him with all of our hearts. It's not going to be the same without him."
Alexander had just turned one month old on the day he died.
The Marcums will be taken to the Southwestern Regional Jail.
