WINFIELD, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The Winfield Police Chief says a 16-year-old Winfield High School student was detained after bringing a knife to Friday’s home football game.

Chief John Perrine says the school’s Resource Officer was approached by several students with information that another student at the game was brandishing and bragging about being in possession of a knife.

Perrine says the officer located the student in the bleachers and confronted him about the knife. The chief say the student then gave the officer a 3-inch pocket style knife. The student was then escorted from the stands.

Perrine says any criminal charges will be determined following the outcome of a meeting Monday with school administrators, who will also decide on any disciplinary action against the student.

The name of the student has not been released.
