UPDATE 1/20/14 @ 6:15 p.m.
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- After weeks of searching, it's the news the family of Diane Bess did not want to hear. The 21-year-old woman's body was found last Friday along W.Va. Route 10 in Cabell County by a man looking for fire wood.

"He was going to collect that wood, and as he was looking at the wood lying by the side of the road," Cabell County Sheriff Tom McComas said. "He observed the body laying over the embankment."

Investigators are not saying how Bess died. As of now, they're only saying the case is a homicide.

"Part of any investigation is maintaining the integrity of the investigation," McComas said. "Obviously, there are certain facets that we don't want to release because only those person or persons involved will know certain facts about the case."

Earlier this month, Bess's mother, Melissa Sikora, spoke with WSAZ.com while she and her family were searching for Diane. She said her daughter left their home in Guyandotte to go shopping on Christmas Eve, but was never seen again.

"She wouldn't just walk away or not say anything," Sikora told WSAZ.com. "My child is somewhere. Somebody knows something."

And that's what police are now working to uncover: What happened to Diane, and who is responsible?

"At this point in the investigation, detectives and those officers working the case are out turning over every stone," McComas said. "We're going to do everything we can to find the person or persons responsible for this and bring them to justice."

UPDATE 1/20/14 @ 11:25 a.m.
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The Cabell County Sheriff's Office says the body found along WV Route 10 on Friday is that of a missing woman from Huntington.

Sheriff Tom McComas also says that Diane Bess’ death is being investigated as a homicide.

Huntington Police say Bess, 21, was last seen Christmas Eve when she left home in the Guyandotte area to go shopping.

At the time, police said they were concerned about her welfare because she had no reason to be gone, and no history of disappearing.

Sheriff McComas says investigators are not saying how or when Bess died to “ensure the integrity of the investigation.”

Bess’s body was found Friday afternoon over a hillside along Route 10 about 1/4 mile south of Doss Hill Road. McComas says a man looking for wood found the body.

UPDATE 1/17/14 @ 4 p.m.
CABELL COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Cabell County Sheriff Tom McComas tells WSAZ.com that the body, believed to be a woman, was found along Route 10.

The body was found just north of Salt Rock by a man hunting for wood.

Sheriff McComas says the body is over a hillside.

"Obviously a body in this location, over the road edge, is suspicious, but we have no idea of the manner of death or cause of death, who the individual is," McComas told WSAZ.com.

At this time, they are also not certain how long the body has been there. "It would appear that it has been there for a period of time. It doesn't appear that it was place there today," McComas said.

McComas does say the clothing on the body is similar to the description of the clothing a woman from Huntington was wearing when she disappeared.

"The only agency in the area that has a missing persons report or the most recent missing persons report is Huntington Police Department," McComas said. He says HPD has been notified of the body being found.

More information could be released Friday evening.
