UPDATE 7/7/11 @ 4:05 p.m.
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- From being a school teacher and librarian at an elementary school to being accused of child pornography.

A local man is fighting a mound of evidence against him. In today's preliminary hearing, Lennie Adkins says he's innocent of the charges and is confident the court will eventually agree.

Lennie Adkins makes his living working with children. But, now the Cabell County schoolteacher and librarian is charged with sexually exploiting them.

Among other things, the 31-year-old faces eight counts of possessing material that shows minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct.

West Virginia State Trooper M. Moore says she found images of two boys who were 16 and 17 at the time on a computer and Ipod seized from Adkins' home.

“They were chatting with Lennie Adkins and he requested they send photographs of their genitals to him,” said Trooper Moore.

Trooper Moore works with the crimes against children unit. She says when all of this happened nearly two years ago, the boys were students at Cabell Midland High School where Adkins was a teacher.

When asked why the boys felt compelled to send the photos Moore said it could have been any number of reasons

“A lot of times, children when somebody asks for something they just do it and send it. I have no idea why some of them do that,” said Trooper Moore.

“You've only heard one side of the story. You've not heard Mr. Adkins' side of the story and there will be a vigorous defense mounted,” said Dennis Kelley, defense attorney.

For now, the case has been sent to the grand jury. In the meantime, Trooper Moore issues a warning to children.

“When you send your image or your picture out there, it stays forever. There's no way to retrieve it and make it disappear,” said Trooper Moore

Two other charges against Adkins were dismissed today during his preliminary hearing.

ORIGINAL STORY 6/6/2011
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- We expect the teachers and school employees that spend the day with our children to practice good behavior -- on and off the job.

But, an elementary school librarian is accused of behaving very badly after police say they found child pornography in his home.

The material dates back to 2008, but it all caught up with him a few weeks ago.

Lennie Adkins is the defendant in question. West Virginia State Police received information that he had been soliciting minors by using a computer and instant messaging inappropriate conversations, suggesting pornography sites, questioning their sexual orientation and making homosexual suggestions.

Adkins was most recently a school librarian at Geneva Kent Elementary in Huntington, but has also worked at other schools in the district, including Cabell Midland High School where he was a math teacher.

The 31-year-old Adkins faces 11 felony charges, including six for distributing material of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct.

According to the criminal complaint filed in Cabell County Magistrate Court, West Virginia State Police found six photos dating back to 2008 and 2009 of the two males nude. Both were minors at the time.

Adkins is also charged in connection with several text messages exchanged between an unidentified adult male about having sexual intercourse with minors. Adkins is accused of coaching the man to have sex with two other boys, ages 15 and 9, and take pictures of it and send them to him.

“This is an important issue in West Virginia because we want our children to grow up in West Virginia in a safe environment,” State Police Sgt. Michael Baylous said.

Jedd Flowers, communications director with Cabell County Schools, said, “We understand parents’ concern, and we take them seriously and act in any way we can to protect the children, and we will continue to do that."

The investigation was initiated by the school administration after receiving complaints from concerned teachers.

Flowers says it's important when people notice something that doesn't seem right to tell someone so it can be investigated.

Adkins is free on a $110,000 bond.
