HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A solution to an ongoing sewer problem and an aging wastewater treatment facility could find city residents reaching deeper into their pockets.

Huntington City Council heard first reading of a proposal to buy a conveyor belt for the city's wastewater treatment plant. That belt will cost more than $30,000.

But Mayor Steve Williams says the larger problem of 100-year-old pipes and infrastructure could be a lot more costly to residents.

That could possibly include raising sewer rates to fund millions of dollars worth of work.

Meanwhile, the conveyor belt project now moves on to a second reading.
