Rally for Second Amendment Rights

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) – Flags, signs and hoards of people all say they’re out to defend the Constitution.

At West Virginia's Capitol, the gun control debate took center stage. It's a hot topic, especially following the president's proposed legislation.

"I don't think the 2nd Amendment has ever had anymore importance than it does now when we have an administration that has a complete and total disdain for the Constitution," said Frank Tumas of Ritchie County.

"It's a crucial time in America to where people are afraid that their rights are going to be infringed upon," said Delegate Joshua Nelson (R – 23rd District)

It was just one of dozens of "Stand With the Second" rallies that were held in cities across America on Saturday with one message for Washington -- don’t infringe.

"Taking rights away from, you know, law abiding citizens, hard-working people is not right in my opinion," said Nelson.

But they say this is bigger than just another fight to bear arms -- it’s about freedom.

"The reason we have a 2nd Amendment is not so we can hunt, it's not so we can protect our homes -- it's so we can protect ourselves against an overbearing government," said Tumas.

But not everybody agrees.

"And I think if we have some measures like the President has proposed -- I think that's a step in the right direction, although I think it's going to be a difficult battle," said Jacquelyn, who didn’t want to give her last name.

A battle over something that’s not black and white and an issue that’s up for debate.
