PARKERBURG, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The name of a man shot Tuesday by a Parkersburg Police officer has been released.
Paul Christopher Johnson, 42, a fugitive from Parkerburg, West Virginia, was shot after a traffic stop on W.Va. Route 47, according to information from West Virginia State Police. Johnson was initially stopped about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Johnson brandished a handgun at officers and left the scene in a 2003 Ford Expedition.
Moments later, more Parkersburg Police were able to stop the SUV again.
They say Johnson got out of the SUV and brandished the handgun in a threatening manner toward officers. Officers responded by firing back.
Johnson was shot several times. He was taken to a local hospital and then transferred to a hospital in the Morgantown area for further treatment.
The incident is being investigated by the Parkersburg Detachment of the West Virginia State Police.
The shooting happened at Washington Avenue and Plum Street.
Witnesses on the scene said the suspect pulled a gun and made threats.
The man was shot was taken to an area hospital in critical condition, according to our sister station WTAP.
