Tomblin Outpacing Maloney in Campaign Cash Raised

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin sported more than three times the campaign cash as Republican opponent Bill Maloney in the wake of West Virginia's primary season.

A Democrat, Tomblin also attracted nearly 45 percent of the $3.5 million raised from contributors by all statewide candidates during the primary. The figure excludes federal races or money provided by candidates themselves or through public financing.

All told, spending on these statewide races topped $2.6 million during the primary season. The two-seat state Supreme Court race accounted for two-thirds of that spending. With six Democrats running, the expenditures per seat approached $895,000.

The May 8 primary featured just a few other statewide contests. The only unsuccessful candidate who spent the most in his race was Republican Steve Connolly, who ran for treasurer.
