UPDATE 10/5/12 @ 10 p.m.
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) – Deputies say two suspects went to a motel and tried to steal cash, but the theft and getaway did not go according to plan.
“You can't trust folks. Turn your back, they'll steal from you," Cabell Deputy Sheriff Terry McFann said.
The desk clerk at the Huntington Inn had his back turned long enough for a woman to prove that point Friday morning.
Deputies say Sarah Roseberry walked into the office, didn't see anyone, and she jumped over the counter and grabbed more than $150 out of the cash register.
“She believed the employee wasn't looking," McFann said.
The desk clerk walked into the office and saw what was going on. He grabbed Roseberry's purse away from her, and the two fought and struggled, according to the criminal complaint.
Roseberry ended up running away and leaving with just about $20 . The desk clerk was able to hold onto the rest.
The complaint says Roseberry took off with Frank Evans Jr.
They were both caught soon after on Route 60.
Deputies say they'd recently seen security video of Evans using a stolen credit card. They say the connection was almost too easy. Evans was wearing the same clothes from that security video and had the victim's ID in his pocket.
The two suspects are from Florida. Neighbors are hoping after their stint in jail, they return to the Sunshine State.
“It's nice to recruit good football players from Florida, but we don't need their criminals," Richard Hill said.
The bond for both suspects was set at $35,000 dollars.
Evans is also charged with conspiracy to deliver crack cocaine. The criminal complaint says they found nearly $2,500 in cash on him.
The Huntington Inn was robbed Friday morning.
According to the criminal complaint, Sarah Rosenberry, 27, climbed through the desk window in the motel's office and grabbed cash out of the register. She was able to get $158 and put it in her purse.
The clerk saw Rosenberry and tried to get the money back. The clerk was able to most of the cash, but Rosenberry got away with $23.
Rosenberry got into an SUV with Frank Evans Jr., 55, of Citra, Florida, and they drove away from the crime scene.
Deputies say Evans Jr., dropped Rosenberry off at a gas station. She was caught and taken into custody.
She is charged with first-degree robbery and capias for possession.
Investigators say they tried to stop Evans Jr., after he dropped her off but he drove away. They were able to block him a few blocks away and also take him into custody.
He is charged with aiding and abetting, fleeing, and conspiracy to distribute narcotics.
Another man was also arrested in the incident. Leonard Johnson is facing drug charges.
According to the criminal complaint, he conspired with Rosenberry and Evans Jr., to deliver and distribute crack cocaine.
There were several grams of crack cocaine on him. But according to the criminal complaint, Johnson told deputies the drugs belonged to Evans Jr., and that he was a "drug dealer".
Evans Jr., had $2,455 in cash on him when he was picked up.
They are both expected to be in court on October 15.
It happened Friday morning at the Huntington Inn along Route 60 in Cabell County.
Cabell County Deputy Sheriff Terry McFann tells WSAZ.com that a woman from Huntington crawled over the counter in the office and stole money from the cash box.
McFann says that an employee saw her and tried to get the money back and that the two got into a scuffle.
The woman took off with her boyfriend in a car. They were caught just down the road.
McFann tells WSAZ.com that she ran away, but a deputy caught up with her.
They were both taken into custody.
She will be charged with first degree robbery and fleeing.
The man, who is from Florida, is expected to be charged with accessory after the fact.
McFann says they got away with less than $200 in the robbery.
Two others were also arrested at the motel after drugs were found in the suspects' room.
No names have been released.
McFann says, "The moral is, be aware of your surroundings. You can't trust folks, no matter what they look like or how they act. If you turn your back, they'll steal from you."
