SURFSIDE BEACH, SC (WSAZ) -- A West Virginia couple is behind bars in South Carolina, charged with shoplifting at Walmart and assaulting an employee.
WMBF, the NBC affiliate in Myrtle Beach, reports that Leeza Ferguson, 19, and James Ferguson, 26, both of Gallipolis Ferry, W.Va. were arrested last week.
Police say that last Thursday, Leeza was seen putting a cell phone charger and bathing suit into her purse, while James looked on.
When they went through the checkout and didn't pay for the items, the employee took them into an office, according to police.
When Leeza pulled the stolen items from her purse, police say she also pulled out a 9mm semi-automatic handgun. Police say an employee took the gun and unloaded it.
At that time, police say James became loud and threatening toward another employee. That's when they say Leeza got a hold of the gun and pointed it at the first employee. When she realized it had been unloaded, police say she started swinging at the employee.
Police say James took another gun out of his waistband, and while Leeza tried to remove the safety, an employee took the gun before she could fire it.
Both are charged with shoplifting, assault/assault and battery and unlawful carrying of a pistol.
As of Monday morning, both were still in jail.
