UPDATE 2/12/13 at 10:51 p.m.
PUTNAM COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- He was a gift from above. After all, Brittany Hudnall’s Pomeranian was hit by a car on Christmas Eve.

So when she was given another dog by a complete stranger in Kanawha City a couple weeks ago, it helped dull the pain she’d been feeling.

"Whenever I got that Yorkie he kind of -- I called him Mr. Scruff -- he kind of filled that void of having my little dog gone," Hudnall said.

During the last two weeks, Brittany and Mr. Scruff bonded, and he became a member of the family.

"He slept with me every night and laid on my legs and laid on my lap and we got really close to him, I took him everywhere I went he went with me, too," Hudnall said.

But, it turns out the little Yorkie already had a home.

On Tuesday morning, Brittany’s grandma saw a picture of the dog in the newspaper. Mr. Scruff’s real name is Puddles and he was stolen Jan. 22 from his home in Putnam County.

Two people are accused of stealing Puddles. One of them, Laci Slater, was arrested and charged with petit larceny. The other, Cassandra Arthur, is still on the run.

"It has been horrible, absolutely horrible. Imagine losing a part of your family," said Vicki Arthur, Puddles’ owner.

But, understanding the pain of losing a pet, Brittany and her grandma knew the right thing to do and was able to reunite him with his owner.

"And sent me a photo of him and we knew right away it was him. So, we were -- we can't even tell you -- we were just ecstatic about it,” Arthur said.

"It tore me apart to give him back, but I knew that was the right thing to do and I know how it feels to get your dog back," Hudnall said.

Now, Brittany is one again looking for a new dog. But, she may not have to look long -- Vicky Arthur has plans for Puddles and her friend’s Yorkie to have some puppies.

UPDATE 2/12/13 @ 12:09 p.m.
PUTNAM COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A dognapping rooted in a family battle. Now, the Putnam County Sheriff's Department is involved, and the dog may be long gone.

Vicki Arthur is still upset over the events of Jan. 22.

"I noticed a red (Mitsubishi) Eclipse coming down the road," recalls Ms. Arthur. "I recognized it to be my ex-daughter-in-law."

Arthur undoubtedly wishes she never opened the door to her house that day. She says her dog ran outside as the car pulled up out front.

The ex-daughter-in-law and two other women showed up at her house in the Liberty area of Putnam County, snatched up their beloved family pet, Puddles the Yorkie, and bolted.

"As I was standing there screaming and hollering they ignored my plea," Arthur told WSAZ.com. "They left and we have not seen the dog since."

Well, the dog was caught on camera, spotted on surveillance at a Go-Mart in Kanawha City -- with the ex-daughter-in-law. Now Puddles isn't the only one wanted.

Deputies have issued a warrant for Cassandra Slater Arthur. As soon as she's caught, she'll be charged with a felony of grand larceny.

Vicki's family's also done some detective work, finding out Cassandra was unsuccessful in her attempt to give Puddles away at Go-Mart. But she may have found a person willing to take the pooch at the nearby IHOP restaurant.

That person was only described as a woman with blonde hair. Vicki's family just wants their dog back.

"If you're an animal lover, you'll understand," she said. "He is very important to us and we won't stop until we get our dog back or we at least see justice for him."
