HURRICANE, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A well-known automotive business is suffering a big financial blow after police say a longtime employee used its money to pay her own bills.
Investigators say Sandra Ball of Hurricane stole more than $450,000 from Mountaineer 4x4 along Tanner Road.
They say she worked for the business as an auditor for 13 years, paying taxes and preparing checks.
She is accused of using the company's computer system to pay her personal credit card bills
The business is owned by Claude Brian Ellis, who serves on Hurricane City Council. He declined to comment, but investigators say Ball was his friend.
"It's a terrible thing that you can't have trust for the people that work for you and work around you," said Keith Larson, who lives near the business. "It's bad that you have to look over their shoulder, but that's our day and time."
According the criminal complaint, Ellis became worried that his business was losing money. When he checked the records, he noticed red flags that were traced to Ball.
Ball has been charged with eight counts of computer fraud and one count of fraudulent schemes.
Sandra Kay Ball, 56, of Hurricane, is facing several charges including, computer fraud and fraudulent schemes.
The owner of Mountaineer 4X4 in Hurricane worked with Ball for more than a decade. Police say over the years Ball took $450,000 to pay a credit card bill.
