CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A Boone County, W.Va., woman who was 35 weeks pregnant and went into cardiac arrest is grateful to a CAMC Women's and Children's Hospital medical team for their skill and quick thinking.

Dr. Stephen Bush, an obstetrician, helped saved the lives of Alicia Petry and her son when he performed emergency surgery.

"Oh, my God," Petry said of her reaction of holding her son Easton for the first time, as well as having the gift of her own life.

Several months ago, 35 weeks into her pregnancy, Petry suffered a heart attack. On Tuesday, she and Easton were reunited with Dr. Bush and his medical team in Charleston.

"We immediately took her back for a C-section," Dr. Bush said. "During that time, we discovered she was worse than we initially thought. We had the baby out in ten minutes. It was the fastest C-section I had ever done."

After months of treatment at the Cleveland Clinic, Petry and Easton returned to CAMC for a celebration Tuesday.

Dr. Bush and the medical team who assisted him were overjoyed by the occasion.

"There are things that we do, and the things that make you go into medicine and this is one of those times," anesthesiologist Dr. Alvin Castillo said. "All of that effort by everyone involved really paid off and made a huge difference, not only to Alicia but to her baby and her family."

Petry's mother Angela Taylor said, "I'm just so thankful that nobody gave up on her. Because if they would have, she wouldn't be here today."

As for her part, Petry said, "They played a big role in letting me continue to live my life and be a good mother."

Alicia and Easton are both healthy and able to go home to Boone County.
