OLIVE HILL, Ky. (WSAZ) -- Someone's in the kitchen with Juanita, Janet, Lorraine and all the ladies at the Smokey Valley Truck Stop.

It's become a local tourist attraction after being featured on the Food Network. Smokey Valley isn't known for it's gimmicks, just good food after 30 years, but its Coconut Cream Pie caught the attention of folks from national TV.

Juanita Flannery owns the place. Since the segment aired, she says, "people have been calling and coming in from all over the country."

Juanita never realized what kind of following the Food Network has from its loyal fans. Last week, one couple stopped by, crisscrossing the country, eating at the hot spots they've seen on TV. The star attraction here has been the coconut cream pie.

Since the TV show spotlight, the ladies have been making about two dozen a day. Janet Littleton's a cook in the kitchen. She says, "I never expected all these people coming from everywhere, and I mean everywhere!"

The Food Network is profiling several local businesses in coming weeks, including Rocco's, Hillbilly Hotdogs and Central City Cafe, all in Huntington.

A rebroadcast of the show that featured the Smokey Valley Truck Stop will air on April 11th at noon.

For Sheryl--Carter Caves is very close by and is a beautiful place to hike, horseback ride, mini-golf, etc. It is off the next exit east of the exit for the Truck Stop. People are very friendly here and would be glad to give you directions from the restaurant. Also, there is an Octoberfest in Grayson (also close by) sometime in October. Go to www.wugowgoh.com for the information on that.

Just saw Smokey Valley on the Food Network!! Sounds great! Would love to come by and eat. But is there any other great, just have to see sights close by so I can make day or two trip. We enjoy the outdoors/cabins, miniature golf, festivals. Maybe around the first full week in Oct. I would appreciate any tourists info.

Can't wait to find this rest. I am from Breathitt Co. and went to school at Morehead. I am thinking it will be easy to find. When I get back home I am going to take mom to the Truck Stop...I may go early enough to eat the biscuits/gravy....shop and go back for a burger and COCONUT PIE, all in one day. What fun it was to watch this episode on TV. I just happened to be flipping channels and I heard a "southern voice" that caught my attention. I had never even heard of the show before. I do very little TV watching...it must have been just meant to be. Mom always put the melted shortening on her biscuits to when she made them, I think the butter browns or burns to quickly. No place like KY for good food and good people.

YUM-YUM!!! I almost drooled on my tv screen the other night when Bill was showing that pie! Coconut pie is my favorite and there's no place in H'ton (since Dwights/1st St closed) to get GOOD pie anymore! I LOVED this story but I'm with "anon" here...so glad my hips and I don't live closer to this pie lol. So...did Bill eat that huge piece of pie he was measuring? Exactly how high WAS that merangue? I gained 15 lbs just looking at it! Well, hope you enjoyed it Bill (she says while being green with ENVY). Hope you gain 25 lbs from it Bill since I had to watch you having the pleasure of being even near it! Glad this lady and her restaurant's getting national exposure and more business but I'll bet she and her staff are getting pretty tired of looking at pie about now after having to make so many lately!

A local restaurant, little known(except to certain foodies)now has much deserved recognition...Def. get a Burger, they are out of this world!

This is fantastic for the local area. The pie looks delicious! My hips and I are glad I don't live closer to the diner!

I'm glad that other people are finding out about the great food at the truck stop. We've known it for years. I think its wonderful that business is booming.

Darn, I'm hungry now! I love Coconut cream pie! This really isn't suprising since I've met many folks who love to take the scenic route and find good local eateries. In my before kids life, I sometimes traveled with disaster services for the Red Cross and we often did just that. I still remember a little home cooking restaurant in lebanon Ky. that had some excellent food. Last time I was down that way, I learned it had burned, sad to say. I do see what where when and how's point. I'd also like directions, hours of operation etc. and yes there is a phone number and map on google, but that's not always the case. But I bet if he/she just emailed Bill, he'd send you the info.

For the person who left the comment about the reporting, how much more basic is there than eating? I enjoy having wonderful reporting of hometown events and positive news from around our entire region. If you just want hard news facts, build yourself a spreadsheet.

The report, and the article above doesn't mention the name of the show is "Diners, Drive Ins, and Dives." The report mentioned the host's name, and the title of the episode, "Like Mama Made," but not the title of the show. Some people might not know what show to watch when it re-airs.

Every now and then WSAZ makes small mistakes but who doesn't? They are my favorite news station and as far as local news, Huntington area, they rock! If you don't like them then turnthem off.

Posted by: Janie on Apr 8, 2008 at 04:03 AM
I think it is wonderful that Diners, Drive Ins and Dives has boosted their popularity. I saw the episode featuring them the day it aired.
