FLOYD/JOHNSON COUNTY, Ky (WSAZ) -- Officers estimate that hundreds of people drive on US-23 a day, but soon all will have to make a pit stop.

Kentucky Vehicle Enforcement and State Transportation officials are building a permanent weigh station at the Floyd-Johnson county line.

Police say overweight coal trucks are always a problem on US-23.

Now, all trucks traveling north will be required to get weighed.

Officers said the new weigh station will help the state get overweight trucks off the road, and it may even prevent truckers from overloading their trucks to begin with.

ANOTHER WASTE OFF TAX DOLLARS. THE TRUCKS JUST NEED TO SLOW DOWN.

I'd would rather see coal trucks hauling a little overwieght than speeding the way they do. Empty or loaded they run 70 on the 4 lanes. I say give'em just a little on the weight but pull their CDL's if they go a mile over the speed limit.

I don't work w/coal trucks but I do work for an independent trucking co. Please don't automatically blame truckers and company owners for being greedy; please realize in the current economy NO ONE in this business who operates locally and independently is bringing home a big paycheck. We're barely getting by, and we have children and families to take care of too. No one in this business wants to see anyone get hurt, but we also must make a living. There are always some people who try to skirt regulations and get by with things they shouldn't. And just like any other career there are good drivers and bad drivers. Please understand that not everyone is a greedy man behind a desk somewhere who cares not for anyone or anything but his wallet. At our company, we're barely breaking even but we want to keep our employees working. Please don't let a few bad apples spoil the bunch. Without truckers & the trucking industry, much (if not most) of your lives would come grinding to a halt.

The truckers are blatantly greedy when they haul more than is safe. Why doesn't the KVE demand a SAFER weight limit like the Federal 80,000 pounds instead of trying to make people think they are actually doing something by enforcing the DANGEROUS Kentucky limit of up to 126,000? What a farce!

if desiel and gas prices keep going up they will be no need for a weigh station.

Shut them down boys.

Dont say the owners/drivers are greedy, Your local goverment extended the coal weigh limits long ago for economical gain.

I agree with you Cindy we often travel that way to go to husbands sisters and the coal trucks don't care who's on the road if you don't watch out they will run you right off of there. I think the police need to pay more attention to how fast the coal trucks go as well. It gets really scary being surrounded by the trucks and not knowing if they are going to hit you cause they are going to fast and not able to stop quick enough if you slow down.

Better late than never..traveling US 23 is equivalent to playing Russian roulette, I sincerely hope this gives some much needed control to the greedy owners/drivers who are far too willing to risk innocent lives to bring home a big paycheck.
