UPDATE:
A man was fatally shot outside a fireworks stand in Eastern Kentucky on Monday. The victim, Philip Hickman, was shot on US 119 in Pike County.

Now a murder investigation is underway and although police are questioning someone, they're still not ready to say who pulled the trigger.

“It sounded like a snap pop going off or something. They thought somebody shot a little snap pop you know, and it was, i guess, a gunshot,” Charles Myers said.

Myers says someone went outside to see what was going on and found Hickman shot, laying on the ground by his car. He died at the scene.

“it's a scary thing,” Myers said.

Other witnesses told police they saw a green pick up truck with tinted windows drive away. Police say the driver turned himself in hours later.

Hickman's friends at the flea market say he frequently stopped by to say hello and they believe that's what he was doing this time. They say he never caused any trouble and they don't know why anyone would want to hurt him.

”The fellow there is a good fellow, a fine fellow, you know what I mean. I don't see why anybody would want to shoot him,” Myers said.

Police are looking for answers.

Family and friends are mourning Hickman’s sudden death and say the community lost a good person. His friends hope to find out why this happened and they say they want see whoever shot him behind bars.

Hickman leaves behind a wife and children.

Police have questioned the man who witnesses say drove away from the scene immediately after the shooting. So far no arrests have been made.

We know the Hickman family well and have spent vacations with them and it breaks my heart this happened. The murderer should be behind bars and suffer they way he is making the Hickman family. Where is peoples mind these days...Thou shalt not murder!!!!!! does that many anything these days or do people even read the BIBLE anymore?? Who are you to take another mans life? You should go to prison and stay there for LIFE! I pray there will be justice done for the HIckman family. We are living in a time thats scary, people better get ready for the Lord to return and get his children...It cant got on like this!!

It was clearly self defense. This was a tragedy no doubt but I don't know anyone if their life was in danger, that they would not try to defend themselves at all cost. Iknow both men and I also know that the man who shot Phillip is a decent hard working man who would never do something this severe unless he had no other choice. He was asleep in his truck when he was accosted. I suppose he should have sat idly by and lost his own life?

no you shouldn't get pity for killing a man but you should not be punished for protecting yourself.

It makes me sick how people are saying well it was over drugs. BIG DEAL....honestly if they cracked down on everyone that did or had something to do with drugs in general a lot of ppl would be busted, so why don't we let these familes rest & not go on & on about your bullcrap opinons.......if this was your father or husband regardless of the situation you would not want them dead!!!!! I am so sick of the simple minded ignorance. Phillip was a great man, & he will be sadly missed by a lot of people.

I know people get upset & say pray for both families, & yes this would be hard on Ike's family as well, but they may see their daddy/husband again & Phillips family will not. This is serious, & he should be punished I am sorry, but you can't kill someone & get pitty from it. This should not have happened regardless!

I Don't Feel Sorry For The Murderer and are you sure it was even a drug deal?! I Hope You're Sure Of Your Facts Before You Would State Something Like That Because From What I've Seen Of Phillip Hickman He Was A Good Man Who Loved His Wife and Kids! He Will Be Greatly Missed In Our Community!

I would like to know how Sherry has this inside information. There has been no mention of this on the news, so where is she getting this from. For her sake I hope no one finds out who she is. Is she so stupid that she does not realize she could be sued for deframation of character. This is not what the family needs to hear from someone who has no idea what they are talking about.

i knew phillip hickman for yrs, he worked underground with my husband for about 5 yrs, everyone needs to stop to think that both of men had familys that are grieving and probley in shock that something like this could happen, espically in a small community like pike co ky and mingo co wv, this is a horrible thing for anyone to go through, i want to say to phillips wife tash, and the children that im so sorry to hear about the loss of your husband and father, for both the familys i send all my sympathy, i dont know why anything like this could happen to either of these men, due to the fact that from the best of my knowledge they use to be friends, god bless both the familys.

Everyone should pray for BOTH families. The shooter, Ike McCoy Jr has a wife and 2 small children who were on vacaton. So God be with them as they make the trip home to face this tragedy. Phillip Hickman also had a wife and 2 teenage children who will need lots of prayer and support. In the end let us remember, these men were abgry over a drug deal, Perfect example of how drugs hurt everyone not just the user.

Is there any respect for human life out there in our world? PETA and other groups will go to extremes to protest the deaths and mistreatment of animals, but when it comes to human life we seem to have grown dull. In fact people today can kill another human and be out on the street within 5-10 years. Does anyone see a problem with this picture???

Posted by: Anonymous on Jun 30, 2008 at 03:31 PM
It is my understanding the shooter has been captured

I Pray that the police find this murderer, and we all need to pray for this family.
