RUSSELL, Ky. (WSAZ) -- Summertime swimming fun nearly turned tragic Monday for a young girl rescued from drowning.

The quick action of rescuer Mike Lacks saved the girl’s life. She was in the shallow end of the pool when she encountered a drop-off into deeper water.

"There was no water splashing – nothing," Lacks said.

A firefighter trained in CPR, Lacks said he realizes he was in the right place at the right time. The girl had stopped breathing for nearly three minutes.

Aaron Withrow, chief engineer at WSAZ, is a certified CPR instructor who recently trained staff at the station.

"CPR is something anyone can do," he said.

Jason Smith, who has been a lifeguard for three years, said CPR knowledge is crucial, especially for families who have pools in their backyards. Information is available online about the basics of saving someone's life until trained professionals arrive.

“I think parents with pools should be certified -- and even babysitters,” he said.

The girl was released Wednesday from the hospital and is doing well.

Mr. Lacks is not the only hero in this situtation. His brother-in-law is also a hero. Mr. Lacks retrieved the little girl from the water and handed the little girl to his brother-in-law who performed CPR. It was his brother-in-law's determination not to give up in performing the CPR that saved the little girls life. His brother-in-law also accompanied the little girl in the ambulance in route to the hospital. Mr. Lacks, his father, and his brother-in-law are all heros in my eyes. The little girl is doing great and the last I had heard was still in the hospital, but was due to come home any day. Thank God for the happy ending.

Hats off to Mike, his dad and brother-In-law. You truly are American Heroes. Your family and community are extremely proud of you. Thank you for a job well done and may God continue to bless you and your family.

I think that is great. God bless you for saving that girl! Parents that have pools should go thru a CPR program just for cases like this. Also, put a gated fence that can be locked around your pool, and have restictions like if there is no adult present the pool is off limits. And keep it locked(with a pad lock) until an adult or proper supervision is able to be there.

I would like to take this time to say Thank you mike. I know Mike and most of his family and this little girl was lucky he was there. Mike is also a vol. fire fighter, I dont think enough credit is give to our firefighters who go through countless hours of training and not enough Thanks for all they do in our community. I think greenup co should have firefighter appreciation day! again Thank you Mike for saving another life and all you do.

I'm really happy to see another news story with a happy ending on here! With all the bad things going on right now, it's refreshing and it gives me hope. I'm just glad that no one is on here screaming, "Where were her parents!?!?" It's nice to know that we can still be human and still have heros!!!!

To echo other comments, thank God Mike Lacks was "at the right place at the right time" and things appear to have turned out well. I assume the little girl is ok and didn't suffer any damage. The article does state "The girl had stopped breathing for nearly three minutes," so I was just wondering. Mike is a def. angel to the little girl.
