VIRGIE, Ky. (AP) -- Governor Steve Beshear says legalizing casinos remains a possibility in Kentucky even though lawmakers rejected the idea earlier this year.

Beshear was in the eastern Kentucky town of Virgie on Thursday night for his first in a series of town hall meetings over the next five weeks. He told the audience of 400 people that he doesn't think the casino gambling issue is dead.

The governor said he is traveling the state to listen to Kentuckians' suggestions on how state government can continue to provide services under tight budget constraints. The state faces a $900 million revenue shortfall over the next two years.

Residents who spoke at the meeting urged the governor to concentrate his efforts on creating jobs, building highways, fighting drug abuse and improving education. The next town hall meeting is Monday in Somerset.

We can't smoke in public but people can drink in bars and get behind the wheel of a car to do damage that way. RIGHT ON ASHLAND, KY!!!! And I doubt we'll be able to smoke in the casinos. Can't smoke then ya can't go!

Well Current smoker I think your wrong & WSAZ has had business owners interviewed very recently reporting up 40% loss since the ban went into effect, try to tell them smoking isn't an issue . But you do make my point people ignore this until it is run down their throat.

If the state needs money, like all the rest also do,they should look into an income from making lawyers pay a license fee and business tax like the rest of the public do.No state charges them anything to operate a business!Belonging to a group of fellow BAR members is the only requirement.Of coarse most politicians belong sooooo guess that will never pass.Lawyers don't gamble, they sue.

I don't think that this is a smoking issue at all! People would still spend money regardless, smoking or not, and smoker's (although inconvenient), could just go outside from time to time. It's about lowering state taxes in many areas, not just about providing another venue for smokers. Look for the long run, not the wrong lung.

Gov. Beshear may do a lot better with his casino campaign if he could guarantee the voters that the facility would either be smoking or at least provide acceptable & equal gaming rights for the smoking public who finance it. Be upfront about it don't be like some others & force it on people after the vote. This is a big issue & it needs to be addressed beforehand not slipped in the back door because they are afraid the voters will reject it if they are made aware of the smoking issue first but I believe it would have the opposite effect if they were upfront with it. Take a lesson from our neighbors.
