ASHLAND, Ky. (WSAZ) -- The accident happened in the 4800 block of Winchester Avenue shortly after noon. Police say John KItchen, 87, either didn't see or ignored the flashing lights at the crossing and pulled into the path of a westbound CSX coal train. The locomotive hit the car on the rear passenger side and spun it around.

Police say the KItchen's injuries were not life threatening. He was taken to King's Daughter's Medical Center in Ashland for treatment.

The rail line was reopened just before 1pm.

TO DEBBIE..I AM NOT SAYING 50 YEAR OLDS ARE BAD DRIVERS AT ALL. IM JUST SAYING I THINK THAT IF THEY WOULD START DOING SUCH THAT I GUESS 50 YEARS OLD WOULD BE A GOOD STARTING POINT FOR THEM TO START WITH THE TESTING. TO BE HONEST THEY MAY SHOULD JUST REQUIRE A SOME TYPE OF TESTING EVEN EARLIER TO MAKE SURE PEOPLE ARE FIT TO CONTINUE DRIVING. I HAVE SEEN PEOPLE WHO ARE GOOD DRIVERS AND HAVE SOME TYPE OF MEDICAL ISSUE AT SOME POINT AND FROM THAT POINT THERE DRIVING GETS WORSE. IM JUST SHARING MY OPINION ON HOW MAYBE THE STATE COULD COMBAT AGGRESSIVE DRIVERS AS WELL ANYONE WHO SHOULD NOT BE DRIVING AT ALL. IM NOT DISPUTING THAT PEOPLE IN THAT AGE ARE HORRIBLE DRIVERS. I WAS JUST COMMENTING ON THIS PARTICULAR INCIDENT. I AM NOT DISAGREEING WITH YOU AT ALL. ANYMORE IT DOESNT MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE HOW OLD YOU ARE ANYMORE, THE CELL PHONE PROBLEM IS GETTING WORSE ALSO . SUCH AS PEOPLE TALKING AND SENDING TEXT MESSAGES WHILE DRIVING. THIS IS BECOMING A SERIOUS ISSUE EVERYWHERE.

No one had to drive around any RR crossing there, They even took out the light. Wasn't there a young girl killed right there about a year ago.

Bill, 50? Insurance statistics show those between 50 and 64 are the safest drivers on the road, yeah an 84 year old may need vision and retesting, but 50? Young drivers are the most risky, that's why their rates are higher.

I think that if people would obey the signs and actually pay attention to what they are doing then stuff like this wouldn't happen

Thanks Engineer for writing! I know first hand what it can do to an Engineer and the Conductor who hit and kills person. My husband hit and killed a man about 6 yrs ago, it was hard on him to pass that area and not think about the accident. He must live with the pain of knowing he did this. It only takes a few minutes to Stop at a crossing. So please for these men and women who work out there everyday take a few moments to think of them when crossing those tracks.

I DONT HAVE ANYTHING AT ALL AGAINST ELDERLY PEOPLE WHATS SO EVER. I REALIZE I WILL BE OLD ONE DAY MYSELF. I NOTICED IN THE ARTICLE THAT THE MAN IS 84 YEARS OLD. MY OPINION I FEEL THE STATE OR FEDERAL REGULATIONS REQUIRE RANDOM DRIVING EXAMS FOR THE ELDERLY BEGINNING AT THE AGE OF 50 YEARS OLD. I SEE THESE ELDERLY PEOPLE DRIVING EVERYDAY. I SEE A LARGE AMOUNT THAT HAVE NO BUSINESS DRIVING A MOTOR VEHICLE. THEY ARE OPERATING 2,500 TO 4,000 POUND WEAPON DAILY. I FEEL THIS SHOULD BE SOMETHING THE STATE SHOULD REALLY FOCUS ON. I AM STARTING TO SEE THIS AS A PROBLEM EVERYWHERE. I AM GLAD THIS MAN IS OKAY. I AM JUST VOICING MY CONCERN WHEN IT COMES TO THE ELDERLY OPERATING MOTOR VEHICLES.

Ya know...I'm totally suprised this kind of stuff doesn't happen daily. I am an engineer for CSX and see this stuff multiple times daily. People are in such a hurry, they can't even wait 30 for just 2 engines to clear a crossing. People don't realize that we are humans too. If we (railroad employees) would happen to kill someone, it effects our lives too. Come on people. WAKE UP!! Do you ignore stop lights, stop signs, etc.? There are tracks there. That means trains move on them!!

Posted by: Debbie on Oct 15, 2008 at 02:26 PM
while I'm glad he's OK, people need to understand, car vs train, train wins EVERY time. Not only could he have been killed, he could've caused a derailment which could have killed others.

Wander when people will start realizing that those signals are there for a reason. This person needs his driving privleges revoked until he does learn. He's lucky it was just himself in the car. What a tragedy it could have been if this person had had family in the car. Don't people ever think beyond themselves these days?? DUMB question huh?

Why do people not pay attention to anything anymore especially train signs...I mean I hope that they are ok but they need to be more aware and pay more attention to their surroundings..

I drive from Catlettsburg to Ashland everyday, and see people drive around RR crossings daily! People are stupid!
